Christo and Jeanne-Claude, despite much opposition over the years, feel that it is essential to their work that their projects take place in populated areas.  The following is a quote from Christo regarding that feeling.

"All the projects are done in places where people relate to the space.  And, as I have said before, that space is already regulated and used for some purpose.  We arrive at that space and we borrow that space for a short time.  The way the project is enriched by this tremendous complexity is that the space is used by and is meaningful to the people."1

For these reasons it is important that The Gates project be done in Central Park.  If The Gates were to be done some place else it would cease to have the same meaning.

The artists also always recycle all of the materials used for the projects.  The artists also view opposition to their projects as expected.  They say that it is because they never do the same thing twice that they are met with opposition.

"If in Colorado today, were we to tell people: you have a beautiful bridge.  May we please wrap it?  Look at this book.  It's 400 pages, showing you how beautiful the bridge in Paris looked.  Probably everybody would say 'Oh!  That is magnificent.  Yes, you may wrap our bridge.'  But we have no wish to wrap again a bridge.  Therefore we have to go over the fact that all human beings are afraid by what is new.  It is our work to convince them they will enjoy it, and even if they don't, allow us just for 14 days to create that work of art."2

On their website the artists point out that "so-called environmentalists" are usually the ones who oppose their work.  They note that after the projects are completed these organizations usually realize that the site is restored to its original condition.  They also cite that "the real environmentalists" are usually on their side because they are better informed.  The Sierra Club is noted as one of these organizations.3
