Cartoon published by the Sierra Club in reference to the upcoming The Gates project.

Although Christo and Jeanne-Claude have faced many oppositions and difficulty getting permits over the last 46 years, the most recent surrounds the Gates Project.  After 24 years, the artists finally received approval from the New York City Mayor to start the installation in the winter and spring of 2005.  There are still, however, many groups opposing this project.

One of the major groups opposing this project is the New York City chapter of the Sierra Club.  To the Sierra Club this project is seen as "the most extensive intrusion of man-made structures and equipment into the 150 year-old park."1  The group points out that the project will greatly impact the 79 species of birds that live in the park.

Among these birds are the endangered Peregrine Falcon and several other species listed by the New York State's Fish and Wildlife Service as threatened or have been designated "of special concern".  The Sierra group feels that, unlike more urbanely common birds such as pigeons and sparrows, many of the Central Park birds will be disrupted by construction noises, machinery emissions, and the 7,500 clothes flapping in the wind.2

The Sierra Club is calling for a comprehensive Environmental Impact Statement and will continue to oppose the project until such statement is made.
